Fleeing fascist Europe, struggling to obtain exit visas, amidst a crowd of desperate people at the vast transit station in Marseille. Anna Seghers described this situation in her 1942 novel Transit , based on her own experiences, and director Petzold makes no pretence whatsoever that this story is a thing of the past. Through the electrifying juxtaposition of historical material and a thoroughly contemporary setting (complete with police in riot gear), the film brings to life the ever-existential questions surrounding migration: survival in the face of bureaucracy, whether or not to trust, hope and lies.
In Paris, Georg narrowly escapes arrest, unwittingly assumes the identity of the writer Weidel – who has just taken his own life – and, whilst fleeing via Marseille, becomes increasingly entangled in Weidel’s life. Weidel’s transit visas, now in Georg’s possession, are also valid for his wife Marie, who knows nothing of Weidel’s death. Naturally, Marie and Georg soon get to know one another, but that does not immediately mean salvation.
