Film am See

Zürrer Bakery

Kurt Früh – CH 1967, in dialect with no subtitles, 110 mins, digital.

Anyone who has felt that local cinema was somewhat lacking at Film am See in recent years can look forward to Bäckerei Zürrer this summer. Kurt Früh’s Langstrasse opera embodies movement and the refusal to stand still on several levels. In terms of content, it depicts the clash between tradition and modernisation in 1950s Zurich, with the breakdown of existing social norms and a previously unthinkable intermingling of cultural groups. A young generation is pushing forward, developing new life plans and ultimately prevailing. Fortunately.

In terms of filmmaking, too, this 1967 film marks a turning point. Within his own body of work, Kurt Früh leaves the cosy living rooms of Swiss middle-class families and steps out onto the streets of a growing, changing city. Last but not least, the film brings Zurich’s urban transformation to life. Time and again, you can spot a building that still stands today, or discover a place that has since disappeared. For that reason alone, this film is always a pleasure to watch.
