Nuclear fission and radioactivity

Every nuclear fission reaction produces radioactive fission products. Large quantities of these are also produced in nature. But what exactly is radioactivity? The lecture explains the physical principles of nuclear decay, types of radiation and dose units, describes typical natural and man-made sources of exposure – including those resulting from disasters – and assesses health risks based on current scientific findings. It also identifies where risks are overestimated or underestimated and how current limit values should be interpreted.
