Corrupt emperors, disease or barbarians?
Was it the power of corrupt emperors, deadly epidemics, economic strain or pressure from so-called ‘barbarians’ that led to the downfall of the Roman Empire? This course examines common explanations and critically explores how contemporary sources and modern research interpret the empire’s downfall. The focus is on long-term structures, political decisions and patterns of interpretation. As a result, the decline is seen not as a sudden collapse, but as a multi-layered process with surprising relevance to the present day.
