Klaus Koenig delivers a masterclass by adopting, as he himself puts it, “the practical approach” from Felix Mendelssohn’s “Songs Without Words”: the numerous emotional twists and turns and the ballads are embellished with magnificent improvisations. Here we find real gems such as “Autumn Girl”, dedicated to his wife, so delicate that even the touch of Andi Wettstein’s cymbals seems to embrace you. Or the playful yet thought-provoking “Song For A Child”, in which the virtuosity of bassist Patrick Sommer comes to the fore. An inspiring solo piano composition rounds off this extraordinary album.
