Open-air cinema: Orlando

The film adaptation of Virginia Woolf's classic novel is a pleasurable and insightful play with gender identity across the centuries - with the fantastic Tilda Swinton as Orlando.

Orlando (Tilda Swinton) is a time traveller through four centuries and a border crosser between the sexes. First favoured as a very young nobleman by the English Queen Elizabeth I (great: Quentin Crisp), Orlando falls madly in love with the Russian princess Sasha. But his love is disappointed and he flees into poetry and as British ambassador to Central Asia. There, however, he prefers a seven-day sleep to the bloody war and awakens as a woman. Surprised and curious, Lady Orlando discovers female desire, but also the narrowness of the role ascribed to her, until her journey through time finally takes her to 20th century London.

Sally Potter's Orlando is an adaptation of Virginia Woolf's literary model, and the title character is still regarded today as a symbol of a modern, strong person whose story oscillates between socially critical seriousness and playful self-irony. The unconventional freshness of this costume film has held up just as well: "Hardly any other film has brought the gender discourse to the screen with so much light-footed irony and so much poetic charm" (Pink Apple). And Jimmy Somerville's angelic performance should not go unmentioned.
