Urban Waters 2026

Between water and city: art to immerse yourself in, experience and participate in

"Urban Waters" will be presented from 13 March to 12 April 2026 at GZ Wipkingen from 13 March to 12 April 2026. The public art festival inspires visitors to reflect on and experience the ecological, social and cultural significance of water.

Water shapes our landscapes and cities – and yet we often only become aware of its role when changes become noticeable. At first glance, Zurich, with its lake and rivers, seems like a natural space in the middle of the city. At the same time, floods, droughts and issues of water quality and water use are increasingly affecting everyday life. On the other hand, our local waters are also caught between climate change and resource use. Water is vital; it shapes urban spaces, community life and our everyday lives. But what significance does water gain when we experience it not only as a resource but as a shared cultural asset?

With these perspectives in mind, "Urban Waters" transforms the GZ Wipkingen into a place of exchange, experience and reflection. Through art installations, performances, concerts, readings and workshops, visitors can explore the multifaceted role of water in the city and in a global context. The exhibition brings together 22 works and is accompanied by a diverse supporting programme of 17 events. Admission is free.
