The kunstkasten, founded in 1999, is a well-established cultural institution in Winterthur's art and culture scene. It is a glass exhibition space for contemporary art, approximately twelve cubic meters in size, located in the public space of the Sulzer Areal, a former industrial site in the city of Winterthur. It stands out as a small island amid the large historic buildings, attracting attention through its visibility and unique character. The kunstkasten and the public space engage in a constant dialogue, creating new spaces for thought daily. The architecture of the kunstkasten challenges artists to engage with the site-specific environment, leading them to create works of an installative or performative nature.
