Raise crows

Carlos Saura (Spain, 1976)

‘In the heart of Franco’s Spain, eight-year-old Ana lives with her two sisters in the centre of Madrid. Following the death of her parents, she is taken in by her authoritarian aunt and convinces herself that she can decide on the life and death of those around her. A film about childhood, coupled with a dramatic reflection on the end of a dictatorship and the hope for a bright future. In her home, which is characterised by bourgeois rigidity, Ana finds a way to resist – thanks to the parallel world she has imagined. Carlos Saura is a poet of cinema: Cría cuervos transcends the purely political and, through its rich visual language, explores the mystery of childhood resilience.» (Cinémathèque suisse, June 2023)
