Postcards from the Edge

Mike Nichols (USA 1990)

“Suzanne, a young actress, is recovering from her drug addiction and trying to get her career back on track. The production company behind her latest film forces her to move in with her domineering mother, a Hollywood diva in whose shadow Suzanne has lived her whole life. As well as navigating the cut-throat world of the film industry, she must come to terms with her complicated relationship with her mother. Loosely based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Star Wars heroine Carrie Fisher, the mother-daughter duo of Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine is compelling, delivering touching, humorous and unflinching moments. Meryl Streep and Shel Silverstein, who wrote the song ‘I’m Checkin’ Out’, were nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe Award.” (Cameo Cinema, Dec 2021)

“By alluding not only to Fisher’s image but also to her own, Streep fully embraces the film’s Hollywood satire without losing sight of Suzanne’s addiction and self-loathing. When she finally performs the country song ‘I’m Checkin’ Out’ in the film’s finale, she seems to be fully on board with the joke.” (Josh Rottenberg, LA Times, Apr 2026)
