Life

Joseph Losey (Italy/France 1962)

“The Welsh writer Tyvian Jones (Stanley Baker) has enjoyed tremendous success with a partly autobiographical novel. Nobody knows that the manuscript was left to him by his late brother. When the film adaptation of his book premieres at the Venice Biennale, Jones meets the utterly captivating Eva (Jeanne Moreau) there and is immediately smitten by her. Yet the unscrupulous stranger has no interest in him whatsoever and instead begins to harass and fleece him.» (arthaus.de)

“Michel Legrand, pianist and composer, the so-called Mozart of Nouvelle Vague cinema, was explicitly told that he was actually only the director’s second choice for the soundtrack to Eva. Joseph Losey had originally had his eye on Miles Davis for the project. Yet Legrand’s beautifully composed jazz film score perfectly complements the charismatic atmospheric scenes set against the film’s Venetian backdrop. And it reflects the main character’s love of jazz music. The film also features two tracks by Billie Holiday: ‘Willow Weep for Me’ and ‘Loveless Love’. Tony Middleton can be heard singing in ‘Adam & Eve’.’ (soundohm.com)
