In Afterlives (2025), Lee’s first feature-length desktop film, the filmmaker explores the interplay between images and violence through IS propaganda videos. The questions are inspired by Farocki: How can one critically engage with images of terror without inadvertently reinforcing their toxic content? From what standpoint can they be effectively analysed and turned against their intended purpose? Moving back and forth between online environments and dialogues with researchers, between museum artefacts and AI-generated images, and inspired by the figure of Medusa, Lee’s film offers guidance for navigating today’s complex online and offline visual worlds.
