Broken Arrow

Delmer Daves (USA, 1950)

‘Director Delmer Daves, a master of the genre, created a gripping drama centred on the plight of the Native Americans in the shadow of “Manifest Destiny”. The film is regarded as one of the first post-war Westerns to portray the indigenous peoples of this country in a decidedly favourable light. It follows Tom Jeffords (James Stewart), who is drawn into the Apache Wars and eventually joins the tribe’s struggle against the advance of the US Army. Daves’ film, which was nominated for Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Jeff Chandler’s supporting role, not only critiques the legacy of American imperialism but also raises the question of whether coexistence or the conquest of the land is the right path.” (Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, Los Angeles)
