Before Midnight

Richard Linklater (USA 2013)

“Their conversations about love and life began 18 years ago: in Before Sunrise (1995), Jesse, an American, and Céline, a Frenchwoman, met on a train and spent a romantic day in Vienna. In Before Sunset (2004), they strolled through Paris and rediscovered their feelings for one another. Another nine years later, Jesse and Céline are living together. They spend their summer holidays in Greece with their daughters. Meanwhile, the daily grind has taken its toll, and a relationship crisis has begun to brew. Can a romantic night in a hotel save their love?’ (Cinema Luna, Feb 2014)

‘I like to fill in the gaps on topics that are often overlooked. The older you get, the more absurd and tragic life becomes. Although there is a certain melancholy in this film, there is also a kind of wonderful mutual understanding. They still make each other laugh, and that gives cause for hope.” (Richard Linklater in: The Guardian, June 2013)
