He Ran All the Way

John Berry (USA, 1951)

He Ran All the Way offered John Garfield, Hollywood’s foremost working-class hero, one last major role: following a botched robbery, the petty criminal Nick shoots a police officer whilst on the run. He barricades himself inside a family’s flat and takes them hostage. He Ran All the Way is a key film of the Blacklist era and, at the same time, a kind of culmination: John Garfield died a year later, aged 39, of a heart attack. When FBI agents tried to serve him with a HUAC summons, John Berry fled through a window from his flat and emigrated to Europe. He chose Paris: ‘I didn’t want to speak English any more.’ (hb)
