Discover the extension
Find out more about the Kunsthaus extension and the architectural vision of star architect David Chipperfield on our architectural tour.
The Kunsthaus was built on Heimplatz in 1910 and has been extended several times since then. The building designed by David Chipperfield, completed in 2021, is now Switzerland’s largest art museum. The extension now incorporates four key thematic elements: art from the 1960s onwards, the Merzbacher, Looser and Bührle collections, temporary exhibitions, and a central entrance hall serving as an open space for experiencing art. The expanded Kunsthaus offers access to all genres of art. It currently highlights different aspects of contemporary art and is expanding key areas of the collection that make the Kunsthaus Zürich unique.
