New Year’s Concert with the Swiss Orchestra
‘Brilliant Fantasy’ featuring saxophonist Valentine Michaud
On 2 January 2027, the Swiss Orchestra, Valentine Michaud (saxophone) and Lena-Lisa Wüstendörfer (conductor) will be performing in the ballroom of the Chipperfield Building. The New Year’s concert, themed ‘Brilliant Fantasy’, will centre on the saxophone – the instrument invented by Adolphe Sax in 1846, which became the iconic voice of the modern age, from jazz to early sound films.
With its versatile sound – soft and dreamy or sharp and passionate – it evokes a wide range of associations. The programme features works by Alexander Glazunov, François Borne, Georges Bizet, Joseph Lauber, Antonín Dvořák, Frank Martin and Johann Strauss (father and son). The soloist is the Swiss-based French saxophonist Valentine Michaud, who won the prestigious Credit Suisse Young Artist Award in 2020.
