The Giacometti controversy and the core of the collection
A short guided tour to mark the 125th anniversary of Alberto Giacometti’s birth
How did one of the world’s most significant Giacometti collections end up in Zurich?
In the early 1960s, the extensive collection of the Pittsburgh industrialist G. David Thompson was put up for sale. Its acquisition for Switzerland sparked a heated debate about art, public funds and cultural policy responsibilities. After attempts to secure funding from the federal government, the canton and the city had failed, private donations enabled the establishment of the Alberto Giacometti Foundation in 1965. The guided tour recounts this eventful history and examines key works that remain at the heart of the collection to this day.
The guided tour is led by art educator Astrid Näff.
