Alberto Giacometti and Paul Cézanne – a kindred spirit

A short guided tour to mark the 125th anniversary of Alberto Giacometti’s birth

For Alberto Giacometti (1901–1966), Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) was an important role model in many respects. Over the course of his artistic career, the Graubünden-born draughtsman, painter and sculptor realised that he could never truly capture the real world in his works. He applied this observation equally to his portraits, landscapes, interiors and still lifes.

Paul Cézanne, too, experienced this sense of failure in a similar way. For both artists, the process of perceiving a subject and the process involved in creating a drawing, a painting or a sculpture (in the case of Alberto Giacometti) is more important than the finished work.

The guided tour will be led by art educator Kerstin Bitar.
