EDVARD MUNCH
Film programme for the exhibition at the Arthouse Piccadilly 1 cinema
This powerful 1974 biopic about the Norwegian Expressionist Edvard Munch explores the formative influences on his art: his childhood, marked by serious illness; the early death of his mother and several siblings; a fateful affair with a married woman; and his move to Berlin.
There he sought refuge after being met with hostility by critics and audiences alike – experiences that left a lasting mark on him and his work. British film director Peter Watkins described the film, which was also shown as a series on Norwegian and Swedish television, as one of his most personal works.
With an introduction by Sandra Gianfreda, curator of the exhibition.
