Lawrence Fields Supersonic Trio

Jazz piano tradition meets soul jazz, funk, and hip-hop

Since New York City-based pianist Lawrence Fields released his debut album "To The Surface" in 2024, his career as a bandleader has accelerated rapidly. Lawrence Fields is not only an extraordinary pianist and master of various keyboards—consistently ranking high in magazine polls for years—but his ability to blend highly memorable melodies with sophisticated harmonies has already earned him a unique place among the many talented instrumentalists in today's jazz scene.

As a teenager, he long struggled to choose between an IT career and his passion for music; a scholarship to Berklee ultimately tipped the scales. He subsequently broke into the top tier of the jazz world, working with artists such as Branford Marsalis, Christian McBride, and Nicholas Payton. He has since found kindred spirits in trumpeter Christian Scott (aka Chief Adjuah) and Joe Lovano, becoming a key member of their respective bands. With Lovano, he performed as a soloist this year in a symphonic tribute project honoring John Coltrane—including a performance in his hometown of St. Louis, the city that famously produced Miles Davis.

With the Supersonic Trio, Fields expands his profile as a musician rooted in the jazz piano tradition by incorporating the sounds of his youth: soul jazz, funk, and hip-hop. In doing so, he follows in the footsteps of Ramsey Lewis, Les McCann, George Duke, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, and Geri Allen—artists all distinguished by their immense musical openness and breadth. The formation is a group he honed over years of regular live gigs in NYC with top-tier musicians. Kyle Miles has developed an electric bass style that avoids common clichés; oscillating between a foundational bass role and expansive, atmospheric textures—and capable of evoking the timbres of both a grand piano and a Fender Rhodes—he plays a pivotal role in shaping a cohesive band sound. Among the youngest generation of drummers, Elé Howell is a prodigious talent, valued by stars such as Ravi Coltrane and Gary Bartz for their bands.
