Nizar Rohana Trio
One of the most compelling oud virtuosos of contemporary Arabic music.
The Palestinian oud player and composer Nizar Rohana brings together the rich traditions of Arabic maqam music with influences from diverse musical worlds. In doing so, he has developed a distinctive musical language that connects tradition with contemporary expression.
Together with double bassist Tony Overwater and percussionist Ruven Ruppik, he forms a trio distinguished by its intense interplay, intricate rhythms and expressive improvisations. Balancing musical depth with a sense of freedom, the three musicians create a lively dialogue, inspiring one another and continually opening up new sonic spaces.
With The MCO Session, recorded at the historic MCO studio in Hilversum, the Netherlands, and released in July 2025, the trio makes an impressive return. The four tracks combine original musical approaches with tributes to tango composer Astor Piazzolla and Ottoman musician Tanburi Cemil Bey. On stage, the trio reveals its full dynamism and spontaneity – rooted in tradition, open to new perspectives and rich in musical expression.
