Sambaqui

Along the Brazilian coast lie mounds of shells, thousands of years old: the sambaquis. For a long time, they were considered trash. Yet they are a record of the past, built up layer by layer from generation to generation. That’s exactly how samba came to be: no one created it alone.

The Zurich-based band led by singer and composer Neya Castro explores the diversity of Brazilian Samba, from Samba de Raiz to Partido Alto from Rio de Janeiro. At the heart of it all is the roda: the band in a circle, singing together, call-and-response, and improvisation. Here, people don’t just listen—they sing along.

On stage are six musicians with roots in São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Lisbon, and Switzerland: Neya Castro (vocals), Hatyla Gabriel (cavaquinho), Oliver Pellet (7-string guitar), Simone Santos (surdo), Carlos Assunção (percussion), and Juninho Ibituruna (drums). Their paths have taken them through samba schools like X9, the Montreux Jazz Festival, and the Paris music scene.
