The Minyo Crusaders are a ten-piece big band from Japan who make no secret of their love for their folk songs (Min’yō). “For the Japanese, Min’yō is the folk music that is both closest to them and yet the furthest away,” says bandleader Katsumi Tanaka. Its essence is deeply rooted within them, even if they do not always realise it.
The band reimagines traditional Japanese folk songs by blending them with Latin American, African and Caribbean rhythms. Their powerful and inventive arrangements breathe new life into these traditional working-class folk songs.
The fact that this blend is fantastic is evident not only from the fact that the Moods team have been ardent fans since their performance in 2023, but also from renowned artists such as Iggy Pop and Ry Cooder, who described them as “the best band I’ve heard in many years”.
