How peace comes about
Peace is not a state that simply comes about. It must be shaped: through mediation, justice and a willingness to take responsibility. Coming to terms with the past and conflict transformation are not secondary processes, but prerequisites for ensuring that peace agreements are sustainable.
What is needed to ensure that peace does not merely signify the end of a conflict, but paves the way for a just future? How do unresolved conflicts continue to have an impact – on societies, institutions and individuals? And what does peacebuilding mean in a world where old conflicts resurface and new ones arise?
Peace researcher Laurent Goetschel and conflict researcher Susanne Buckley-Zistel discuss how the past and present interact in peace processes and what role memory and accountability play.
