Simply Zurich – Zurich’s sporting history
Did you know that FCZ was the first Swiss football club to feature advertising on its shirts? That swastika flags once flew at the Letzigrund, beneath which around ten thousand people cheered? Or what the invention of Bircher muesli has to do with collective air bathing in Zurich’s urban oasis? Sports historian Michael Jucker takes us on a tour of the ‘Einfach Zürich’ exhibition and, using selected artefacts, reveals surprising – and often humorous and quirky – facts from the sporting history of the city and canton: which sports were practised here as far back as the Middle Ages? When did sport really take off as a leisure activity, and why? To what extent were women allowed to take part? But above all: how did Zurich actually become a city of sport? And does it still deserve this title?
