Addressing War? Singing about and against war

Workshop 2: Singing about and against war

What role can songs play in war? Laments, songs of resistance (e.g. from the Italian Resistenza) and marching songs fulfil different functions during and after armed conflicts. They create different atmospheres and convey emotions in different ways.

In this workshop, together with choir director Maayan Baram, we will explore songs from various contexts and cultures that are sung in connection with armed conflicts or that serve as a reminder of them. We will listen to songs and discuss them before trying them out by singing them together. What moods can these songs convey? And what impact can singing have in the context of war and conflict?

Participants in this workshop are invited to bring along songs that remind them of wartime contexts. There is no expectation that these songs will be sung (in advance). The workshop will be held in German and English.
