Money and me

Switzerland maintains its own currency, the Swiss franc, in the heart of the eurozone. What does the long-term future hold for this traditional currency? This event focuses on the Swiss franc.
The successful Swiss currency not only stands for stability but is also undergoing profound change in the context of the digital transformation. Although cash plays a significant role in Switzerland compared to other European countries, projects such as the ‘digital Swiss franc’ highlight the possible future of the national currency.

However, the panel discussion does not consider the Swiss franc solely from the perspective of monetary policy and the economy, but also approaches it from a cultural-historical perspective: what relationship does the Swiss population have with the Swiss franc? How can the significance of the Swiss currency be explained from a psychological or socio-analytical perspective?
A further dimension emerges with the question of how to communicate monetary issues to the general public: The Moneyverse, an initiative of the Swiss National Bank in collaboration with the Bern Historical Museum, opened its doors in April 2026 as a visitor centre dedicated to the topic of money in Bern. What initial findings are available from the Moneyverse, and what conclusions can be drawn from them?

With Prof. Anne Hermann (University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland), Dr Thomas Moser (Swiss National Bank), Prof. Fabian Schär (University of Basel), Nicole Steiner (Moneyverse).

Moderator: Hannes Hug
