Werckmeister harmonies
Music theater performance by Thom Luz
The work of the piano tuner is indispensable to any concert and opera activity, yet it takes place hidden from public view. The pursuit of perfect tuning, as in so many aspects of life, inevitably results in compromise due to external conditions. This was already recognised by the music theorist Andreas Werckmeister, who in the late seventeenth century grappled with the challenges of meantone temperament and sought to bring order to these complexities. Werckmeister’s cryptic-philosophical writings, together with compositions ranging from Schütz to Charles Ives, form the starting point for the music theatre creation by the Swiss theatre-maker Thom Luz.
