Hamlet's Dreams
World premiere
‘Hamlet loses his father, the King. How? Poison, administered to the King by Claudius, his brother. Fratricide? Indeed! Fratricide! Uncle Claudius then marries Hamlet’s mother, Gertrude. Uncle Claudius thus becomes Hamlet’s new father. What a state of affairs in Denmark! Ophelia, his sceptical fiancée, tries to win Hamlet over. Denmark, to her: a peninsula. She tries to persuade him to leave. Love. Hamlet doesn’t understand it. He doesn’t understand Denmark, nor love. He understands nothing. Ghosts wander about. Polonius, a councillor, amuses everyone. Or so he thinks. Ophelia longs for “Dream, rewrite me over and over!” and draws her conclusions.»
In Stephan Teuwissen’s dream play, an actor wanders through a Hamlet-inspired world. He feels his way through comedy and grand gestures, discovering new, gentle nuances within the classical material. Teuwissen portrays the characters with sensitivity and, in his play, seeks tenderness and affection amidst tension and violence. With this text, director Mélanie Huber and TOBS! ensemble member Fabian Müller embark on a daring journey through self-disruption, comedy and poetry.
