There is more than one future

Workshop on Combating Hopelessness: Utopia in Practice

What does healthcare look like when it is not driven by profit? How is responsibility conceived across generations? How can care work be organised collectively? How are land and housing shared? And what worlds would be possible if we were to redraw the boundaries of what is ‘realistic’?

These and other questions will be addressed in the workshop led by human rights activist Noemi Grütter. Starting from the crises staring us in the face, participants will be introduced to speculative fabulation, inspired by trailblazers such as Donna Haraway, Octavia Butler, Ruth Levitas and Adrienne Maree Brown. This feminist, decolonial methodology creates space for collaborative, non-hierarchical knowledge production and invites participants to reimagine the world alongside artists, activists and everyday visionaries.

The workshop focuses on listening, storytelling and creating together. Using collages and sound, participants activate their political imagination and develop different futures beyond patriarchal violence, white nationalism, capitalism and climate collapse. In this context, utopias are not understood as a perfect end state, but as a practice – as something one can do on a daily basis to confront the feeling of hopelessness with resilience.

This event is part of the annual focus RAUM.
