What creates space?

An audio installation exploring perception, boundaries and living together

How do we perceive a space when we can no longer see it? How do we construct its dimensions, its architecture and its boundaries? And how do we situate ourselves and others within it?

In the audio installation by Natalie Heeb, space can be experienced in an unusual way: exclusively through hearing. Dark curtains and masks strip the Baroque room of its visible dimensions. Visitors cannot rely on their usual visual cues and must reorient themselves. What remains is a soundscape that fills the space in a completely unfamiliar way.

In doing so, the installation conceives of space not only as an architectural site, but also as a social arena for negotiation. This is made clear through voices, sounds and noises. In an age of increasing polarisation, boundaries arise that can seem like insurmountable walls – created by positions, convictions and attitudes that appear to be irreconcilably opposed. In this fragmented world, are we still even capable of creating shared spaces?

Natalie Heeb is studying philosophy and political science and works as a radio presenter. This is the source of her fascination with the medium of audio.

This event is part of the annual focus SPACE.

Note

Admission takes place before the eleven-minute audio track begins. Visitors can take their time choosing a seat before the room is completely darkened. Following the listening sessions, Natalie Heeb will be available to answer questions and receive feedback.
