How does film change the world – and ourselves?
A conversation with Fatih Akin and Rozerin Coban
How does reality become cinema? Through whose eyes do we see a story? And how can film bring experiences to life for us? The multi-award-winning filmmaker, director, screenwriter and producer Fatih Akin discusses these questions with presenter Rozerin Coban.
This evening’s discussion centres on how films draw inspiration from reality: from observations, experiences, life stories and historical events. Film does not simply depict reality. Who a story follows, what is told and what is left out shapes how we experience it. In storytelling, elements are selected, condensed and altered. Through imagination, new cinematic worlds can emerge. In this way, films can bring us closer to people and their experiences, and reveal what moves them. The discussion will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience.
About the discussion series
Films have become an integral part of our everyday lives. In this discussion series, presenter and actress Rozerin Coban brings together filmmakers, academics and film enthusiasts to discuss the power of film. Together with guests and the audience, she explores how films move, touch and connect people – and how they shape public debates and our ideas about society.
