To what extent does (or did) the spirit of the age shape science and philosophy?
Lecture and discussion
People deal with differing viewpoints in different ways. Do science and philosophy – which, at least in part, lay claim to objectivity – take a different approach to differing perspectives? And, more fundamentally: to what extent does (or did) the spirit of the age shape science and philosophy? What about the interplay between them?
Socially, it is observable that people are increasingly living in different ‘bubbles’. For some people, tolerance of ambiguity has declined. Others seek dialogue and debate. Many people, or even groups, remain invisible. This may be due to ignorance; or, at best, a lack of ability to see things from a different perspective. What can be observed in this regard within science and philosophy? Do they lead the way in showing how bridges can be built?
In this lecture, Sandra Roth-Hauert explores this discourse in depth. How do science and philosophy enrich one another, and how can this be used to build bridges between disciplines, worldviews and social ‘bubbles’?
This event is taking place as part of the 11th Long Night of Philosophy. Further information is available here.
