Beyond Logic

Scientific rigour promises provability and logic. But what is lost in the process? In this session, we will explore the transition from marvelling at a miracle to believing in it. A miracle cannot be replicated and therefore cannot be proven. It is precisely in this that its philosophical potential lies. Our thesis: the insistence on logic alone stifles the emergence of new ideas and risks making philosophy boring.

Together, we will conduct an experiment that gives space to the ‘wonder’ of collective thinking and its expression in writing. We ask: What characterises a miracle? Participants can marvel at and experience first-hand how it is precisely the unforeseen, the creative, the associative and that which is created in the moment that gives rise to new ideas.

The evening will be led by Dominique Zimmermann (philosopher and writer from Basel) and Livio Andreina (freelance actor and director from Lucerne).

This event is taking place as part of the 11th Long Night of Philosophy.
