‘Gwalts-Überraschig’
Forum theatre on domestic and relationship violence
Domestic violence is widespread in our society. In Switzerland, one in five relationships is affected by domestic violence, and a third of all children and young people report witnessing violence between their parents.
Nevertheless, domestic violence remains a taboo subject. We often find it easier to look the other way than to intervene. Yet domestic violence does not only begin with visible injuries. It often manifests itself subtly – sometimes precisely where one would least expect it.
With a blend of suspense, seriousness and subtle humour, Forum Theatre brings these difficult issues to the stage – in a direct, moving and true-to-life way. ‘Gwalts-Überraschig’ makes an important contribution to the prevention of violence by fostering moral courage, dialogue and practical solutions.
Following the performance, there will be refreshments and an opportunity to talk to experts.
The forum theatre production ‘Gwalts-Überraschig’ forms part of the ‘Social Environment as a Protective Factor’ focus area within the framework of Zürich schaut hin. It highlights how people in the social circle of those affected can recognise domestic violence, raise the issue and provide support. In this way, ‘Zürich schaut hin’ aims to strengthen moral courage and demonstrate that the social environment can make an important contribution to protection against domestic violence.
