The Fraumünster
Nuns, iconoclasm and Chagall’s stained-glass windows
The Fraumünster looks back on a history spanning over 1,100 years. Founded in 853, a total of 29 abbesses from the European aristocracy played a decisive role in shaping the history of the city of Zurich until just over 500 years ago. During the Reformation, the last abbess, Katharina von Zimmern, handed over the abbey, along with its estates and rights, to the city in 1524. We learn fascinating details about the origins and history of this historic site. For instance, it is said that a stag decided where the Fraumünster Abbey should be built. Or who knows why the Heaton window behind the grand organ is half-covered? And how did it come about that Marc Chagall created a five-part window cycle here that attracts people from near and far?
