Richard Strauss lived in Switzerland for several years after the end of the Second World War and composed his "Four Last Songs" for soprano and orchestra there. The work is regarded as his artistic legacy - it expresses a mood of farewell and the realisation that everything in the world is finite. Gustav Mahler also deals with the theme of farewell and the transition from earthly to heavenly life in his 4th Symphony. The ambiguity of the brokenness of the course of the world on the one hand and the idyll on the other is impressively audible and is discharged in the final movement with Mahler's song "Himmlisches Leben" (Heavenly Life). Under the direction of Rune Bergmann, the argovia philharmonic is back on stage after nine years with the fantastic Swiss soprano Regula Mühlemann. She is one of the leading singers of her generation and is celebrated for her exceptionally beautiful timbre and sensitive performances.
