BODY - BODY EXPERIENCE CINEMA TITANE
TITANE
Julia Ducournau, FRA - 2021, French/d, 108 min., digital.
The jury in Cannes allegedly fell out over the special prize awarded to Cronenberg's Crash,
back in the 1990s. And in 2021, Titane was honoured with the Golden
Palme d'Or to thunderous applause. Is this the mainstreamification of body horror? But the film is certainly
not for the faint-hearted and may push some to the limits of endurance.
The narrative centrepiece of Ducournau's second film is the mechanophile Alexia, who becomes pregnant from a
Cadillac and gets rid of unwelcome human admirers with a hairpin.
As a wanted serial killer on the run, she also triggers a
paternity crisis in a fireman. - Admittedly, full-fledged genre films can rarely be
described by their storyline. In principle, Titane is a fairy tale for adults that tells of love, anger and
loneliness and is staged on a distinctly physical level. The
events on the screen are sometimes fascinatingly disgusting, sometimes hideously beautiful and have an effect far beyond the
magical window: the image composition and sound design can be experienced physically in the cinema seat (and certainly also
on our unpadded chairs by the lake).

Editorial
Adrenaline kicks in the relaxation of the cinema seat, Buster Keaton's silent and massive
self-endangerment, our visit to the Walchekino that never materialised after all... certainly not the
streaming evening on the couch: physical cinema experience! Only in the dark auditorium (or under the
factory sky) with the seductively shining window into another world can we forget our own
existence in such a way that the film intoxication can spit us out at the end as if
newborn.
This summer, we are once again setting up the big screen on the banks of the Rote Fabrik to take
your senses behind this window and take you on wild experiences beyond your own
body. The films in this year's selection point back to the present
and physicality, pose questions about the inner and outer limits of our physical
existence, tell of vulnerability, gender and race, and entangle us in time and space.
Guilt and longing dance to Colombian reggaeton in Ema, RoboCop mixes up the underworld as a
deadly half-drone of the 1980s, Fantastic Voyage wobbles through colourful
human inner life of the 1960s, Fly So Far shows us the realities of abortion rights that are still
denied today, in Titane a horny Cadillac and a woman with a
hairpin give us beautifully disturbing body horror. For Watermelon Man, we even translated the subtitles ourselves
in white to black, and in La Piel Que Habito, Almodóvar's favourite cuts up memories and
bodies. And finally, The Congress asks whether we will
ever find our way back after the digitalisation of our bodies.
We are counting on you to come back to the lake and enjoy our programme -
and to consider the collection before you go home ...
After four decades of film at the lake, this season is the first without the active collaboration of
progenitor Hans X - we hope that we can manage it elegantly and
well with our cast of youngsters. Thank you very much, dear Hans X, your beautiful sentence remains with us: "We are not a
cinema, we show films!"
Important information
It is important to us that everyone can take part in our film evenings in a simple and uncomplicated way. That's why Film am See has long operated without advance ticket sales or tickets, and we want to keep up this
tradition. However, as always, we are dependent on the
collection. We are very happy about any contribution you can make.
In addition, the final renovations are still taking place on the grounds of the Rote Fabrik.
This may also have an impact on the realisation of the Film am See. So our
beloved 35mm projector will remain in its storage room for another summer and we will be projecting
only digitally. On the other hand, this year we have slightly fewer seats outside and in the club room as a
rainy alternative. So it's first come, first served - or it's as long as it takes.
We would like to thank you very much for coming, for your understanding, for your support
- and look forward to many wild, funny, exciting and thought-provoking
film moments with you at the lake.
