Autechre
Support: MDX, Kyoka
Chaotic, raw, fascinating. The British electronic duo Autechre blur the boundaries between club music, art and mathematics.
Sound tinkerers Sean Booth and Rob Brown have been working together since the early nineties. They are among the most influential artists on Warp Records, which is or has been home to the likes of Aphex Twin, Flying Lotus, Boards of Canada and Yves Tumor. It is incredibly difficult to pigeonhole the duo’s work. They have released albums such as the atmospheric Amber (1994), the experimentally structured LP5 (1998) and the rather radical, avant-garde Confield (2001), right through to the expansive NTS Sessions (2018), all released on Warp.
Autechre’s music involves layering and stacking, manoeuvring between expansive ambient textures and boldly timed beeps and booms, far removed from any melodic focus – which may sound unfamiliar and abstract to some ears. The term IDM often comes up in this context; Sean Booth commented on this in an interview: “All these things about us being intelligent and the term IDM are just silly”. A good example of the down-to-earth nature of the two musicians, who have always been tinkering and evolving, and are likely to surprise us again this year with wild, new sounds.
