Becoming a Guinea Fowl
Rungano Nyoni, ZMB – 2024, English/Bemba, subtitles in German and French, 98 mins, digital.
After a fancy dress party, Shula drives home in her car. Her Uncle Fred, however, is no longer moving at all: he lies dead on the road. Shortly afterwards, traditional ceremonial obligations take their course and the family’s period of deep mourning begins. Yet Shula allows Uncle Fred’s lifeless body to become entangled not only in a web of rituals, but also in silence. Within this, a process begins for her that can no longer be stopped. Accompanied by gentle humour, in Rungano Nyoni’s film the confrontation with silence becomes a quiet but unstoppable force and a wading through repressed violence, social taboos and familial abysses. N’arrêtez pas becomes a principle of resistance here: against the silencing of collective traumas.
Trigger warning: This film deals with sexual violence.
