Anxiety
by Marie Popall & Team
‘For all those who, without having heard her story, claim that she did not exist.’
In their performance, Marie Popall and her team turn their attention to the forgotten folk saint, St Kümmernis. Hieronymus Bosch painted her as a martyr on the cross, wearing a dress and with a soft downy growth on her chin; the Catholic Church sought to erase her.
Collectively, the performers build up the legend amongst themselves. Through choreographed gestures and overlapping voices, an echo emerges within their bodies, causing the past, present and future to resonate with one another. Caught between shame, desire and resistance, Kümmernis is elevated to the status of an icon. With her fluttering dress and hairy mouth, she speaks out against binary categorisations and defiantly returns the gaze. The performers radically break free from what clings to them and, together, explore visions of their bodies and voices.
