Michael Hermann – Book launch
1992 was the year when Switzerland rejected the EEA and yet set out into a new world. In their new book, Michael Hermann and Samuel Tanner recount 18 turning points and defining moments over the three decades that followed: from the bell-ringers outside the Federal Charter Archive, to two women wearing sun-shaped brooches, and the end of banking secrecy. It is the story of a country that swims against the tide, yet is drawn along ever more strongly – until it finds itself swimming with the current, then all the more vigorously against it, and at times even ahead of its time.
Michael Hermann, born in 1971, managing director of Sotomo and columnist, is one of the leading analysts of Swiss politics. For many years, he has been researching the opinions and sentiments that shape this country.
Samuel Tanner, born in 1991, domestic affairs editor at the NZZ, explores Switzerland’s stubbornness and idiosyncrasies through reports and profiles that have won numerous awards.
For this book, they have combined their perspectives to produce an in-depth analysis, complemented by anecdotes that make for an entertaining read. Together, Hermann and Tanner describe how Switzerland is haunted by its fundamental conflict – and how it attempts to reinvent itself as a ‘cool’ country, only to end up as what it is today: the land of the headstrong.
