Zurich Literature Festival – Liv Strömquist

In her latest work, the most influential feminist comic book writer of our time dissects the ubiquitous obsession with self-improvement – with intelligence, bite and her unmistakable humour.

Liv Strömquist (born 1978 in Lund, Sweden) is famous for her cheeky, satirical exploration of social taboos, ranging from sexual history to pop culture. In her books, the political science graduate combines facts with wordplay, photo collages and pop-style illustrations. The Swedish author gained international recognition in 2017 with her book *The Origin of the World*, a kind of cultural history of the vulva.

The political science graduate has regularly contributed illustrations to various Swedish magazines and newspapers and has worked as a radio presenter. Liv Strömquist’s social commentary combines an irrepressible delight in wordplay and justified anger with expressive drawings. Her tongue-in-cheek, meticulously researched non-fiction comics are among the most successful graphic novels worldwide.

In her latest work, “The Oracle Speaks”, Strömquist turns her attention to the ubiquitous drive for self-optimisation – and to why this promise so often leads to dissatisfaction.
