Literature and Music: Choderlos de Laclos – Dangerous Liaisons
It’s all about a bet. A game. A destruction.
In Choderlos de Laclos’ epistolary novel *Dangerous Liaisons*, the Marquise de Merteuil makes a bet with the Vicomte de Valmont as to whether he can persuade a devout convent schoolgirl to sleep with him before marriage (out of revenge against her ex). Yet in this novel of the century, the pact is merely an elegant arrangement – the language, the wit and the poetic feints in the game of seduction are more important than the seduction itself. This is precisely where this novel converges with the French Baroque composer Marin Marais. With their orgiastic variations and recurring bass lines, his suites resonate with that Laclosian blend of refinement and sensuality, for which Thomas Sarbacher and Rachel Braunschweig bring the necessary seductive power.
