Eva Menasse – A Place of Solitary Rest
On the search for a new place in life.
Following Eva Menasse’s award of the Bruno Kreisky Prize for Political Book of the Year 2021 for her latest novel *Dunkelblum* (Kiepenheuer & Witsch 2021), she has now produced another multi-layered novel offering astute reflections on alienation and home. In *Alleinruhelage* (Kiepenheuer & Witsch 2026), she takes stock of the life of a woman who, following the end of her marriage, suddenly finds herself alone with the weekend cottage. She wants to reclaim this place, once a family idyll, and, together with two companions, battles her way through renovations and other setbacks, only to set out once more from her ‘stable state of solitary tranquillity’.
