Between humility and delusions of grandeur. Rap Talk

Rap artists Lo & Leduc in conversation with Okan Yilmaz

When speech becomes song, it says different things; and it says things differently. ‘It’s a bit strange, really – we can all see what’s happening, but we can’t talk about it anymore’ – but: ‘who are we really telling this to?’ And why do we often reveal more about ourselves when we talk about others? With this tension in mind, Bern-based duo Lo & Leduc put their finger on the raw nerve of the present day on their brand-new album *Krise als Chanson*. Tracing the central lines of conflict in our time, they paint a picture of a world in which the early bird flies in the dark, runs the risk of drifting aimlessly to the right, and the digital display of society’s scales of justice now shows nothing but ‘Error’. This is something worth talking about. How wonderful, then, that the duo are daring to do ‘something a bit different’ on their November tour, not only exploring the discourse through their music but also taking it straight from the stage of the Schüür in Lucerne to the Literaturhaus Zürich.

About the series ‘Between Humility and Megalomania’

From the stage to academia, from the streets to the arts pages, and from rhyme to reflection – hardly any other contemporary movement in the art of linguistic expression is viewed with such a wide range of opinions as the texts drawn from the wellspring of rap. Okan Yilmaz studied German and Philosophy at the University of Zurich, teaches German at a grammar school and, in the reading series ‘Between Humility and Megalomania’, explores the poetics of German rap as a literary, cultural and political phenomenon with a variety of guests.

Over six evenings in March, April, May, September, October and November, a space will be created in collaboration with rap artists in which both linguistic subtleties and social conflicts, as well as the performative power of this art form, will be explored from literary and artistic perspectives.
