Couch Reading: Ed Wige – Milch Lait Latte Mleko
At the ‘Sofa Readings’, Swiss debut authors take their place on a flat-share sofa or a studio couch and present their work in an intimate setting.
A mother and daughter flee the war in Yugoslavia and end up in Switzerland. The girl discovers her new home, which – characterised by Bündnerfleisch and chocolate – repeatedly raises feelings of uncertainty. How does she come to terms with the new language, the new home and all those memories? And where, in fact, has her father gone? In *Milch Lait Latte Mleko* (published by Die Brotsuppe in 2026, translated from the French by Yves Raeber), Ed Wige tells the story of exile, the consequences of war and her family’s secrets through the eyes of the girl. The power of this novel – which won the Swiss Literature Prize in its original French version as early as 2024 – lies in its quiet sorrow, but also in the author’s linguistic wit and sensitivity.
