Presentation of the Jonathan Swift Prize to Irene Dische
The international Jonathan Swift Prize for satirical and comic literature has been awarded to Irene Dische in 2026.
The jury, comprising publishing director Dirk Vaihinger, bookseller Ursula Zangger and literary scholar Thomas Strässle, stated in their citation: ‘Irene Dische is a perceptive and astute observer of society and its mechanisms. With cool compassion, she tells of eccentric figures from the past, of the inescapable nature of family psychodynamics and of the misconception surrounding successful life planning. Dische reveals the quirky and sometimes bitter humour as a core element of human endeavour.’ The prize, worth 20,000 Swiss francs, will be presented at the Literaturhaus Zürich.
