Book club: Marlen Haushofer – *The Wall*
Every two months, the book club meets to discuss a book, alternating between classics and new releases. Anyone who has read the book is invited to join the discussion.
Marlen Haushofer’s novel *Die Wand* (Ullstein 2004) begins quite idyllically: an unnamed woman wants to spend a few days in the mountains with her cousin and her cousin’s husband. In the evening, the couple go for a walk to the nearest village, but do not return. When, the following morning, an invisible wall separates the woman left behind from the rest of the world, the atmosphere takes a menacing turn. Cut off from the rest of the world, she sets about surviving in the midst of her confined patch of nature. A feminist classic that addresses both the oppression of women and the exploitation of nature.
